Standard ID card size in India (CR80) and how to design for it

Most ID cards printed in India — school, college, employee and visitor cards — use the international CR80 size. It is the same size as a bank ATM card, so it fits standard card holders, wallets and lanyard pouches.

The CR80 dimensions

Measurement Value
Width × height 85.6 mm × 54 mm (3.375 in × 2.125 in)
Standard PVC thickness about 0.76 mm (30 mil)
Corner radius about 3 mm
Standard ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1

A portrait card is simply the same card turned upright: 54 mm wide and 85.6 mm tall.

Designing your artwork

  • Canvas size: at 300 DPI, a CR80 card is about 1011 × 638 pixels (landscape) or 638 × 1011 pixels (portrait).
  • Bleed: extend background colours about 2 mm beyond the edge so no white line appears after cutting.
  • Safe area: keep names, ID numbers and logos at least 3 mm inside the edge.
  • Slot or hole: if the card will hang from a lanyard, leave a clear area at the top for the punch slot.
  • Font size: names look best at 9–12 pt; avoid text smaller than 6 pt.

Photo size on the card

A common layout uses a photo about 25 × 30 mm, similar to a passport photo. At 300 DPI, that needs a photo of roughly 300 × 360 pixels or more. Larger, sharp photos give the best results.

Front and back

Many schools print the student’s name, class, roll number and photo on the front, and the school address, emergency phone number, blood group and validity on the back. Double-sided printing usually costs a little more, but it keeps the front clean and easy to read.
