PVC vs laminated paper ID cards — which is better for your school or office?

Most organisations choose between two kinds of ID card: PVC cards, printed like a bank card, and laminated paper cards. Both work; the right choice depends on how long the card needs to last and how it will be used.

Quick comparison

PVC card Laminated paper card
Durability Very durable, waterproof, does not tear Can bend, peel or tear over time
Look and feel Smooth, rigid, professional Thicker, softer edges
Print quality Sharp, vibrant colours Good, but depends on lamination
Typical life A full academic year or longer A few months to a year with care
Best for Schools, colleges, companies, hospitals Short events, temporary or visitor passes

When to choose PVC

Choose PVC when cards are used every day, carried in pockets or bags, or need to look professional — student IDs for the whole year, staff cards, and cards that are shown at gates or reception.

When paper can be enough

Laminated paper can be a budget option for one-day events, short workshops, exam passes or temporary visitor cards.

What affects the price

  • Quantity: setup work is shared across the order, so the price per card usually falls as quantity rises.
  • One or two sides: printing the back adds a second print pass.
  • Personalisation: cards with a different name and photo on each card need more preparation than identical cards.
  • Accessories: holders, printed lanyards and clips are priced separately.
  • Design work: using your ready artwork or a template costs less than a new custom design.

Caring for ID cards

  • Keep cards in a holder to protect them from scratches.
  • Avoid leaving cards on a hot car dashboard or in direct sun for long periods.
  • Do not bend PVC cards to fit small pockets; a lanyard or clip keeps them flat.
  • Clean with a soft dry cloth. Do not use solvents on the printed surface.

Holders and lanyards

A clear holder protects any card from scratches and keeps it visible. A printed lanyard with your school or company name adds identity and makes cards easy to carry. Many schools order card, holder and lanyard together as one set.

Our recommendation

For school, college and employee ID cards, PVC usually gives the best value over the year because cards rarely need replacing. Tell us your quantity and use, and we will recommend the right option in your quote.
